100+ years of company history in the Ahr valley

RhEinische KOhlenbürstenFAbrik AG was founded in Ahrweiler on 20 January 1921. It has successfully asserted itself on the market for over a century under changing conditions and has made a name for itself as an innovative and internationally active company specialising in and leading the market for rotating slip ring assemblies at its current location in Antweiler/Ahr.

The company started out in economically uncertain times, shortly after the First World War, with 20 employees - two years later there were already 35. In 1923, the hourly wage was a whopping 23 pfennigs.

Despite the global economic crisis, the company was able to achieve an export share of 30% at the end of the 1920s with a workforce that had grown to 60 employees. In 1936, the former public limited company was converted into a limited partnership - Rheinische Kohlebürstenfabrik Franz Wenzel KG - and the Rekofa brand was protected worldwide as a trade mark.

After the end of the Second World War, the company was first dismantled by the French occupying forces and then renovated and modernised during the German economic miracle.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Rekofa workforce numbered over 500 employees at times. From the defence industry to vehicle production, new markets were opened up and supplied with slip ring assemblies.

At the beginning of the 2000s, a takeover by the British Morgan Group resulted in plant closures and the dismissal of more than 100 employees. The plant in Antweiler continued to operate and was declared a Centre of Excellence, which is constantly being modernised and expanded. The machinery was constantly expanded, and in 2016 the production warehouse was reorganised with modern warehouse lift technology.

The competent service, from planning and development to implementation and maintenance, has been certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001 since 1996. Certification in accordance with the environmental standard DIN EN ISO 14001 (since 2018) demonstrates the company's endeavours to use natural resources responsibly.

Since 2017, the company, headquartered in Antweiler/Ahr, has been part of the Industrial Group of Moog Inc. with headquarters in East Aurora, NY, USA, and thus part of a global company. With Oliver Follmann as Managing Director, who has known the company since his training days, Moog Rekofa has developed into an innovative manufacturer with continuous product optimisation and strict customer focus.

At the beginning of 2021, 100 years after the company was founded, almost 90 employees work at the Antweiler plant. An extension completed in 2022 enabled the R&D test centre at Moog Rekofa to be expanded. Not only are new developments tested here until they are ready for the market, but tests are also carried out according to customer specifications and international standards. The additional premises provide space for up to 10 test benches and measuring equipment, thus significantly increasing the capacity of the research laboratory. New, innovative developments are researched here. At the same time, various long-term and environmental simulation tests are used for quality assurance of the high-tech products.

In addition, there is regular co-operation with other Moog locations with R&D and certified test laboratories in order to be able to draw on all the many years of experience within the Moog Group.

With a motivated team of experienced specialists and well-trained junior staff, Moog Rekofa Antweiler looks to the future with confidence and positivity. Innovation and reliability have always been the best basis for successful customer loyalty in all sectors.
